Female psychologist have been often been downplayed throughout the history of psychology. This exercise assisted in educating students on important, female contributors that are often not as celebrated as they should be. The two female psychologists that I read about were Mary Cover Jones and Karen Horney. This was the first time I have heard about these two women and I enjoyed reading their story and learning about what they each contributed to psychology. These women are not well known mainly because a great deal of their achievements seemed to be downplayed. Andrea Hussong is a professor at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her focus is clinical psychology. Hussong is interested in researching the study of developmental pathways that lead to substance use and disorder over the early life course, the study of children’s gratitude and parents’ related socialization efforts, and the application of integrative data analysis to the problem of pooling item-level data from studies that use similar though not identical measurement. Dr. Regina M. Carelli earned a Ph.D. at Rutgers University and teaches behavioral neuroscience. Her research focuses on how the brain processes information about rewards, and how that information is used to guide goal-directed actions. Dr. Jennifer E. Arnold runs a lab at Chapel Hill and teaches cognitive psychology. Her research is based on the underlying mechanisms of language production and comprehension. Dr. Beth Kurtz-Cortes earned a Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame and teaches developmental psychology. Cortes does research on the development of children’s achievement related beliefs and motivation. Dr. Abigail T. Painter received a Ph.D. at New York University and teaches quantitative psychology. Painter researches evaluation methodology, measurement and testing, advanced quantitative methods, survey methodology, evaluation of HIV/AIDS service and educational programs, substance abuse, educational diversity, and professional advancement educational programs.
