Based on the NAEYC Position Statement there are several factors that impact whether the program is beneficial for the children or not. The first part of being a good program is to create a caring community of learners. According to the Statement, “consistent, positive, caring relationships between the adults and children, among children, among teachers, and between teachers and families,” is what creates a community of learners. The children, teachers, and families must work together on helping the children become successful. Children are taught to developed responsibility and self-regulation. Each member must feel valued by others and feel accountable for their learning and well-being. There are clear reasonable expectations and the physical and psychological environment is positive and safe. The teacher listens and responds to the children after acknowledging their feelings. Then they help the children understand and guide them to solving a problem. Jewett Elementary School demonstrated that they have created a caring community of learners in several ways. Teachers and parents communicate on the daily about the child’s development. There are daily newsletters to keep parents updated on what is happening. According to DAP, “Assessment of children’s development and learning is essential for teachers and programs in order to plan, implement, and evaluate the effective.” The teachers at this program had several ways to assess the children. They keep a child portfolio where they collect the child’s work over the year. They also take notes and observations throughout the day while the children take part in different activities. At this particular program, there are special professionals who come and asses the children on speech and comprehension. They record their observations and create a plan on how the child can achieve their
