The amount of unhealthy food consumed in America goes well beyond McDonalds. In fact, you have to go no farther than your local grocery store to find equally as terrible food choices. For example, in recent years the government has put out warnings against eating fat in excess, which lead many big food companies, from yogurt to Wheat Thins, to send out new products with “less fat”. However, products with “less fat” actually have nearly twice as much sugar. Many studies have shown that sugar in excess is much worse than fat.

Pollan argues that nutritionism does not actually tell people what is healthy or not, and that the only way to be sure you are eating healthy is to eat natural, fresh food.

Although the guilty pleasure may cause nice feelings in the moment, fast food is filled with nothing good. A fast food meal is packed with high levels of sodium, sugar, and countless other chemicals. These harmful products help contribute to death by chronic illness, causing obesity, heart disease, hypertension, and other unwanted conditions. Author Sarah Irani “... further asserts that fast food is prepared in unsanitary conditions and loaded with so many preservatives that a ten-year-old hamburger will look about the same as a fresh one” (Irani). This cheap food has become the culprit for the high consequences on the American population’s bodies, due to the abundance of harmful preservatives and chemicals.

Americans should begin to think about their health because health issues don’t just happen in a blink of an eye. They begin early in life and continue to grow and are more noticeable throughout life. There are five reasons why one should begin to reconsider the food they eat and think about why being educated in fast food items is important. The first reason is, fast food owners promote some foods as a healthy alternative, but some of the foods contain added sugars and fats which defeat the purpose of calling them healthy alternatives.
