Competency: Managing Stress
Developmental Need: My stress management skills are an area in which I would like to improve throughout the duration of the HROB*3100 course. I often find that I am easily overwhelmed when plans get de-railed or things do not go as planned. For example, organizing and coordinating my group members to set a time to meet and work on our Rube Goldberg machine was often challenging. We constantly had group members have very different class schedules and last minute plans come up that forced us to reschedule often in the beginning of the semester. This made me upset and was evident to my group members, as I then got very pushy on when we were going to reschedule our meetings for, which wasn’t good for the group. …show more content…

I set the personal goals to attend all lectures and seminars, and listen attentively and take detailed notes to ensure I am able to do well on all individual aspects of the course. In doing this, I knew I would be prepared for all assignments and tests, which would result in good greats. With regards to the group aspect of this course, I talked with my group and we set the goal of accomplishing our Rube Goldberg machine video ahead of time so we could then focus our efforts on the group analysis portion of the course. In order to accomplish early submission of the video, we all committed to our meetings and to working as efficiently and effectively as possible. I focused on the 12 Tips for Assertive Communication and began to implement these tips as well as the three parts to develop an assertive statement tips when I was communicating with my group. The next time there was an incident with the group member mentioned above, I focused on what my perspective, feelings and wants of the situation was; I’ve noticed that we are often having to repeat the groups thoughts and ideas. I am feeling frustrated because we are not working efficiently, and some members are working harder than others. I would like to make a plan that ensures all members are equally participating and engaging with the project so we are able to succeed as a
