Who do you confide in when you need listening ears? Your family? Friends? Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald didn’t have anyone to confide in or listen to him speak about his true personality and past life. When Nick moved across the country and became neighbors with Gatsby he finally found a confidant. Nick was also a confidant to Tom, Tom confided in Nick about his affair and his marriage with Daisy. Nick was a confidant to many different people because they all trusted Nick, while all the other people in the story had someone who hated them, Nick was liked by almost everyone. Nick was a confidant to Tom because Tom told Nick about his affair. Tom told Nick because he thought that Nick would listen with open ears, not judge, and understand what he was going through. While Nick and Tom were driving together Tom said,”’We’re getting off,’ he insisted. ‘I want you to meet my girl’” (Fitzgerald 24). The car that ran her over was Gatsby's car therefore everyone believed it was him who committed the hit and run. However, while Gatsby was hiding in a bush that night while talking to Nick, Gatsby said, “‘Well, I tried to swing the wheel,’ He broke off, and suddenly I guessed the truth. ‘Was Daisy driving?’ ‘Yes,’ he said after a moment, ‘But of course I’ll say I was’” (Fitzgerald 143). Nick was the only person Gatsby told about Daisy driving since Nick was the only person that Gatsby trusted in that moment. While Nick hated Gatsby for what he did, he still listened to him and Nick never said anything bad to Gatsby. Nick had so many huge secrets throughout the book, if he had let even a few of them out the entire plot of the story would be different and many people would end
