Our country has a long-standing legal system which has evolved in line with social and political changes throughout history. A degree in law is the next stepping stone in my life for me to achieve my goals. I first wanted to go into the field of law after completing a work experience placement at my local Magistrate's court. This experience showed me how the law is applied in our society, as well as proving me with an understanding of workings of a magistrate court. During this placement I had the privilege of shadowing a magistrate, and a solicitor, gaining an insight into the area of civil litigation. There have been many landmark court rulings in the past that shape the societal norms of today such as Roe v Wade (1973) and Brown v Topeka (1954) illustrating that law can impact wider issues than just criminal law. Whilst studying History, I am carrying out an independent study task which has helped me to hone my researching skills as this is a very important skill needed at university especially for studying law. Studying history has helped me to improve the retainment of information, furthermore, by studying the history of America and Russia, I have learnt not only about the people, but also the government and about its legal system at that point in time, allowing me to compare it to the current legal systems that are in place. The skills I have gained from studying English literature has helped me to build my analytical skills and to be more eloquent in my essay writing, as well as having a logical style of writing. I have always been a keen reader, but by studying English literature, it has opened me up to more sophisticated writing and has taught me to formulate arguments in addition to question and critique my own thoughts, which is very important for law because you will need to construct documents that have no loopholes.
