CSX Corporation CSX Corporation is a railroad company on the eastern portion of the United States based out of Jacksonville, FL. They cover 23 states in addition to two provinces in Canada. The core competency is moving rail and intermodal freight from point A to point B. Currently, the network spans 21,000 rail miles, and employs approximately 27,000 people (CSX.com, 2018). The company operates about 1,300 trains per day, 6.5 million carloads of various materials, maintains 4,000 locomotives, and maintains approximately 70,000 freight cars (CSX.com, 2018). This company is the third largest rail service provider in the United States, but the largest on the eastern portion. It is worth noting that two-thirds of the population lives in the areas that CSX serves (CSX.com, 2018). Ironically, CSX is a fairly new company being formed in 1986 (CSX.com). Many layers of corporate governance exist including middle and lower management positions. Currently, CSX is amid a complete overhaul of its operating plan after railroad legend Hunter Harrison was installed as CEO, but he passed away of an undisclosed illness after just 9 months on the job and receiving an enormous pay package. During his time, operations were streamlined that resulted in eliminating many management positions, closing rail yards, idling locomotives, and placing thousands of rail cars in storage.
