Imagine this, a dystopian society where the government controls everything. They made a rule that locks all the teens and children in their homes at dusk. The kids aren’t let out until the morning. Now, what if you were informed that this regulation wasn’t so far-fetched? In many places, government mandated curfews are currently being installed. Governments should not be able to set curfews. Curfew setting should be the right of a parent. Curfews are unfair, ineffective, unconstitutional, and unnecessary. Curfews are not very efficient in the majority of the areas they’re used in. “Philadelphia, like many other cities in the U.S, has had a curfew for youth on its books for years, and just like in those other cities, it doesn’t really work (Nate Berg).” This quote clearly states that curfews don’t work. Is restricting the time teens can leave all the technology and the television and take a break outside, protecting them? Treating teens as criminals is just as bad, if not worse, than labeling them as criminals. They say “Look at the murder rate of the children (Yvonne Wegner and Danae King, The Baltimore Sun)” but, what about the murder rate of everyone else? Why are teens being singled out? Instead, cities should work on finding a way for tens to stay somewhere after dark where they can enjoy themselves. No doubt, curfews are not the answer, they’re not effective, and the resources they use can be put towards something
