" According to Cyberbully Hotline “81% of teens say bullying online is easier to get away with. 3 million kids per month are absent from school due to bullying. 20% of kids cyberbullied think about suicide, and 1 in 10 attempt it. 4500 kids commit suicide each year.” Obviously this is a big issue. Some may believe that the best way to solve this issue is for schools to be able to monitor kids social media pages. Despite this sounding like a simple solution, it’s not the most effective one. Social media pages are made private for a reason, the only people that should be able to view them are the kids running them, and the police. If schools are able to just look at any student’s social media page then the school can look into their own personal life. This shouldn’t be the case because students need a way of expressing themselves without having to worry about the school and what they’ll think of it. Also, schools can easily abuse this power. Any employee of the school would be able to see any student’s social media account and not all employees can be trusted with this sort of power. Next, the police should be the ones monitoring the social media pages. Cyberbullying is a crime in the United States and the police should be the ones handling it. Schools should be able to contact the police for them to check a student’s social media page if there is a rightful cause but otherwise the school should have no say in what goes on in a student’s everyday life. Thirdly, it denies the student’s rights of freedom of speech. The definition of monitor is “observe and check the progress or quality of (something) over a period of time; keep under systematic review.” If schools were able to systematically review a student’s social media account, they would be able to shut it down for reasons other than cyberbullying. This would lead to corruption in the system and is just one more reason why schools monitoring student’s social media accounts is a poor
