Tired, unmotivated, unproductive, or maybe just confused? Those four words describe the lives of numerous people. However, looking into psychology might be the answer to these widespread problems. Psychology is applicable to several everyday things, from exercise to financing, so they can be much easier and enjoyable. However, one can also implement it to dig deeper into life, and uncover mysteries which may have been holding one back from incredible potential.
A large amount of psychologists truly believe their practice is beneficial to improving one’s life. Patients of psychologists and psychoanalysts often see psychology as a method to defeat problems and stabilize their life. When Henley comes to Dr. Shinefield, she is an absolute mess, straight out of a car crash, an abortion, and a string of other family and personal problems. Through her sessions with Dr. Shinefield, she is able to slowly figure out the reasons her life was falling part, and therefore is able to find closure with them. Without the help of Shinefield, Henley would likely be in an even worse place than she was in the beginning of the story. “Psychology is both an applied and a theoretical subject, it can be utilized in a number of ways” (Cherry). The application of psychology can help to further leadership skills through encouraging the stimulation of ideas, the offering of clear guidance, and discussing solutions with group members.
Psychology can overall strengthen communication skills in people through noticing tone of voice and eye contact in others, assessing one’s own emotional responses, and seeing situations from another person’s perspective. With a new level of understanding, communication between people can become much smoother and easier.
A common psychological technique which incorporates into everyday life is the “six thinking hats” method: “looking at the situation from multiple points of view, including rational, emotional, intuitive, creative, positive, and negative perspectives” (Cherry).
