Alcatraz is known to many as the first Supermax prison. It held the most dangerous prisoners in all of America. Once the prisoners were in, they were never coming out. Like everything else in the world, there was a reason for the opening of Alcatraz. Once it was built, then came the worst of the worst. The prisoners. To ensure the safety of the prison itself, the guards needed to live a specific way. It was the same routine every day for both the prisoners and the guards. Now they needed what was the point of the whole operation. They needed the most wanted criminals in all of America. Some famous prisoners were Robert “Birdman” Stroud , George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Frank Morris, Arthur “Doc” Barker, Alvin “Creepy Karpis” Karpavicz, and the Anglin Brothers. Last, but most definitely not least, Al Capone arrived. He was also known to the other prisoners as “Scarface”. It was late in the night when the felons were evacuated from their existing cells to go to Alcatraz. They didn’t know where they were going at the time, but found out soon enough. The Warden was taking no chances of losing an inmate. The convicts walked from their current prison straight to the train with their hands and feet in shackles and the inability to see. On the train, they were contained and tied down in every way. Again there were no risks, The train and the boat were built especially for this occasion. The special train was loaded directly from the dock to the boat so nobody would have to get out. Nobody knew where they were, including the prisoners along with the outside world. Al Capone was the overall worst criminal ever. He murdered so many, but could never be caught. The prisoners of Alcatraz called Robert Stroud, Birdman, because of his love for birds. None were believed to be successful. However, some may have made an escape, but were never seen again. There were a total of fourteen escape attempts made. In 1939, “Doc” Barker and four other prisoners escaped from the isolation unit in the cellhouse by sawing through the flat iron cell bars and bending tool-proof bars on a window. They only got to the shoreline before the guards caught them. “Doc” and one other inmate were shot when they refused to surrender. In 1945, another escape attempt was made by John Giles. He took advantage of his job working at the loading dock, where he unloaded army laundry sent to the island to be cleaned. Over the course of a year, he stole an entire army uniform. One day, he dressed in the uniform and boarded a boat which he thought was going to San Francisco, but it was really going to Angel Island. The guards almost immediately noticed he was missing and John was met by an officer as soon as he got off the boat was returned to Alcatraz. Yet another escape attempt was made in 1958 by Aaron Burgett and Clyde Johnson. They were working garbage detail one day and overpowered the correctional officer and tried to swim away from the island. Johnson was caught in the water, but Burgett was not found until two weeks later when his body was found floating in the bay.
