An essay’s purpose is to persuade and/or inform readers of a topic that a writer is passionate about. In an essay such as Pass, Fail by Ron Srigley the purpose is to persuade readers with a convincing argument and is an excellent example of an effective argument. Srigley is a university professor at UPEI who writes with passion and a slightly sarcastic tone throughout his article to prove his thesis. The purpose of his inductive essay is to persuade his audience (which are parents of future/current students in postsecondary institutions as well as students themselves) that the education system has gone down hill over the years and is therefore a waste of an educational experience. His thesis of the essay comes in the last paragraph: Not just
As our final assignment for cornerstone we were tasked with revising our rhetorical analysis. I received a B, 81%, and by the end of my revisions have “A” quality work. During recent assignments and papers for other classes I realized the thesis was one of the first few sentences in the paper. As I was reading my paper I noticed that the purpose of the author writing this wasn 't until almost halfway into the first paragraph.

PRO LIFE AND PRO-CHOICE PERSPECTIVES A sharp divide currently exists between those who support a woman’s right to choose abortion (pro-lifers) and those who oppose to it on the grounds of right to life (pro-choicers). Lawrence says that we should beware of the labels "Pro-life" & "Pro-choice". He says that they imply that the other side is against "life" or against "choice". The California Common Core Standard I chose was Reading Standards for Foundational Skills K-5 on pages 17 and 18. I specifically chose first grade students. This grade level is appropriate for my teaching area when I begin to student teach and for the classroom I currently work in. First grade students should be able to identify the key components of a sentence (the first word, capitialization and ending punctuation) on a piece of paper. Phonological awareness is important for students to learn early on.
The United States Common Core State Standards for Education The Common Core State Standards is a controversial subject among educators, parents and general public. What most people do not realize is state standards have been around since the 1900’S, and every state has had their own standards in the early 2000’s. Each state standard has levels or benchmarks, which state what the student should be proficient in per grade level. Most of these standards are in place for third grade through high school.
Going Against the Standard According to Tim Walker, “Only 14% of parents say standardized testing is important in measuring school effectiveness” (Walker). A standardized test is a test that is given in a consistent or “standard” manner. Standardized tests are designed to have consistent questions, administration procedures, and scoring procedures. When a standardized test is administered, it is done so according to certain rules and specifications so that testing conditions are the same for all test takers. They often provide some type of “standard score” which can help interpret how far a child score ranges from the average student (Johnson).
Regardless of the thesis's length, it establishes a road map. Although this is not a profound improvement since the rhetorical analysis essay, there is still an improvement and so it displays my efficiency as an English Composition II student. The purpose of this essay is to acknowledge the conditions that impact upon Indigenous students’ education. This will be reached through analysis of the concepts of race, racism and whiteness in Australia. These key understandings of Indigenous students’ will be incorporated into my own critical pedagogy in order to demonstrate how I would teach for reconciliation in my classroom. The concepts of race, racism and whiteness have produced unequal outcomes for Indigenous students to a vast degree in Australian society. The term ‘race’ has a historical context in Australia that is not acknowledged highly enough.
In schools all around the nation, students are taking mandatory standardized tests. To some people, they are the dreaded tests that they never want to take. However, others love to take these standardized tests. Should these tests be mandatory in all high schools? I don 't believe so for many different reasons.
