Freedom There are many meanings of freedom based on what a person believes. According to dictionary.com freedom is the state of being free or at liberty, exemption from external control, interference, or regulation, the power to determine action without restraint, political independence, and personal liberty, as opposed to slavery. However the meaning of freedom to me is being protected by laws, but yet not completely controlled or ruled by laws. Although people are required to follow laws, they still have many choices in what they say or do. In addition to preserving freedoms, these laws also protect everyone. In the article, “Law and Rule of Law: the Role of Federal courts,” it states that laws are rules that bind all people living in a community. Laws protect our general safety, and ensure our rights as citizens against abuses by other people, by organizations, and by the government itself. In the story, Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut everyone was finally equal. No one was smarter than one another, no one was stronger than one another. The equality was achieved by putting a tiny earpiece in people's ears that made them dumber and not as athletic, etc. By forcing people to have to wear the tiny earpiece it deprived them of their freedoms. In contrast, some people use their power for good. For example, Malala Yousafzai is a girl who advocates for girls' education when she herself was still a child. After Yousafzai’s speech about the freedom of education at the United Nations, she was shot in the head on her way home from school because of her beliefs.
