Devotion. Devotion is one word that can take many forms. People can be devoted to many different things: friends, family, work, and past times. What does it mean to be devoted? Being devoted is defined as love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause.
Loyalty is an important connection between friends and lovers. Loyalty in your friendship and relationship establishes trust. It helps you rely on each other, and you know you will have each other's back. However, you need to be careful who you’re loyal to because they may not be the person you think they are, or may not be loyal to you. In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally were the most loyal characters in the book, helping each other out whenever it was needed.
Genuinely, what is loyalty? One can’t even begin to interpret such a word. It’s one single seven letter word yet, it has a broad profound definition. As a matter of fact, typically one does not use loyalty until they are put to the test. Without a doubt, the test can be anything.

In a gang, you are expected to be loyal until death. In Chapter 2 it is said that, "When you're a gang, you stick up for the members. Loyalty shouldn’t be difficult to achieve in this world, but for some, they can't show it or be loyal. I show loyalty by supporting my friends and family in certain decisions, being faithful and devoted to them. One example on loyalty is from Inigo’s backstory when his father was killed. “I, Inigo Montoya do challenge you, coward, pig, killer, ass, fool to a battle”(page 132) After Domingo died, Inigo tried to fight the six fingered man, and even though he is only 10 years old and so smol, he does not hesitate to fight this man because he loved his father in their own weird way. This is important because from the very beginning it sets up Inigo's main plot line for the rest of the story, his purpose is essentially to train and then find and beat this man. Another example is from Fezziks backstory and helps to begin his plot line. Fezzik was a wrestler and he didn't want to but his parents believed it was best for him and the family.

In the family setting especially, loyalty stands as a fundamental element of healthy relationships. Parents show their loyalty by making difficult decisions based on their convictions about the best path for their children. Trust grows from security in steadfast loyalty, resulting in obedience from children, even when the parents’ motives are not understood.
In The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson there are many situations that involve the ineffectiveness and effectiveness of loyalty. Between Jekyll, Utterson, Hyde, and Lanyon the use of loyalty is ineffective, because it led to multiple deaths. Throughout the progression of the novel, loyalty was ineffective because Jekyll could have told Lanyon – his best friend – all of his struggles with Hyde. Lanyon and Jekyll were friends ever since grade school, so Jekyll should know he could have trusted Lanyon with the dark secrets he was facing.
The denotation of loyalty is the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations. Loyalty can be described as remaining true to a certain thing or person. To be loyal is to have a faithful, unswerving allegiance. As proven by The Great Gatsby, The Crucible, and The Grapes of Wrath, loyalty is a strong love for someone or something. Loyalty being a strong love for something is shown in The Great Gatsby.
Some people will never know the meaning of that word. To Ponyboy, loyalty was taught as early as he could remember and was an important part of what held his family together. Because Ponyboy and his brothers were orphaned, loyalty saw their family through many hard times just knowing they were all each other had. American society tends to tune into the belief that loyalty is not given, but earned. Society classifies trustworthiness as a required trait, so consequently, the lack of it renders an individual as ostracised. However, allegiance is used as a malleable commodity to achieve a goal whilst dispending people as cannon fodder. A loyal friend is a person that will always have your back when it comes defending you and making sure you are alright. Loyalty in a friend is very important because without loyalty in a friendship, one friend can go and talk behind your back to another friend when you think your friend is loyal but they are not and are talking behind your back. Loyalty is also a trait that needs to be gained and cannot just be given to a person; it requires time for someone to be loyal to another person. I have personally had few friends that I would consider loyal friends that I would trust to tell anything and I know they will stay by myself and got my back rather than 20 friends that I don’t even know if they will still be my friend in year from
