Leadership. What does that mean to you? For me, I imagine someone standing in front of a crowd giving a decisive speech. I see someone with drive, determination, and devotion. This selected person must be passionate about what he/she plans to lead others into, is willing to make sacrifices, and this person must show support for a cause. His/her followers must respect him/her, which is something to be earned, not given. Leadership is a responsibility; if it is not used correctly, it may have repercussions. It is the action of leading people into a situation, bearing the weight of responsibility on your shoulders. A leader has to be selfless, but he/she has to follow their instincts and beliefs. An effective leader must display certain characteristics of stoicism, without merely displaying the absence of feeling. Too often, people associate leadership with power. When in power, someone can decide every bulletin, every checkpoint, and every move. A leader, on the other hand, takes into account others’ opinions and goals, all the while comparing alternate options - possibly making them better. For some, it may seem like an intimidating task to be able to devote a huge part of yourself to others, but as Panos says, “When we give more than what’s expected, we’ll always get more than we could have imagined as a result” (Get 1). Dedicating time to enriching the lives of others seems as if is just out of reach for many of us. Going in whole hearted could make all the difference, seeing as the world seems more likely to accept the strong efforts being put in. Although many people may see the act of devotion as a way to help others feel better, but it could help this person see themselves in a new light, and appreciate themselves
