To Respect or to be a Kiss Up “Treat others the way you want to be treated. ” We’ve all heard that overused phrase growing up. The same goes for me as well, and to me, respect has been a huge part of my culture and many other Asian cultures. Respect is the root of what makes people who they are today. It shows that you admire them, that you care for them, or possibly even fear them.
What is Self-Respect? Throughout our lives, we have more than likely heard of the noun self-respect. Even though this term is all around us, do we know what it means? In Joan Didion’s essay, “On Self-Respect,” Didion explains the key qualities of how to achieve this matter.

An honor code or honor system is a set of rules or principles governing a community based on a set of rules or ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. An honor code implements a set code that specifies certain rules in their school. An honor code doesn’t benefit students trust in their school system. An honor code can end up making students engage in mistrust, create misuse of the code, and can cause students to be at odds with each other. When students are forced to commit to an honor code, every student isn’t going to be 100% honest.

Without integrity the honor system would fail due to the lack of honesty that is being set in place by having the students taking a pledge. With this being said students that take school seriously want pure focus and having the honor code it allows these principles to be put in place for better grades and higher rates of success. The author Chris Kahn in Source D uses a quote that shows the students use to commit to the honor code, “On my honor as a student, I have neither given nor received aid on this assignment/exam.” Kahn says that these students write the quote on every test that they turn in to provide a reminder that they are under the honor code. This is a strategy that is a strict form of the honor system letting the students to have complete trust in each other and to have the educators trust.
Respect is a word that has a lot of depth to it no matter what way you use it. The word by definition is kind of hard to pin down concretely because it is subjective, and it can be used in many different ways with many different meanings based on the usage. It is a word that everybody wants a piece of no matter how big or small the piece they get is. All definitions aside, the respect that most people want is the respect that is earned by the showing of honorable actions or personality characteristics. Be it dedication and sacrifices for one’s job or ones moral and ethical views and principles.
Honor is a word that is found from a long time ago, to be honor to someone, or be the honor itself. The honor is achieved by a person through his lifetime, and it’s something all of us humans trying to find, so we could discover the true meaning of our life. People go through struggles and misfortune in their life, to find that trait. From a story to another you are going to realize, how the characters are trying not to lose what they have.
