Nursing is often portrayed as a glamorous job that is pursued by many. With any

job comes it’s rewards and challenges. The duty of a nurse provides an opportunity to

make a difference in every day life as well as forming bonds with another person. The

daily routine of a nurse is constantly filled with exercising physical, mental, and

emotional health. A nurse must be ready to meet challenges of patient care making life or

death decisions made in a split second. Nursing is a hands-on type of profession where

you not only relate to the patient, you connect with them.

This is called, The Rules of

the Game. Nurses are meant to be bold, take initiative, and make recommendations, while

seeming to be passive. The Rules of the Game is meant to subtly let the physician know

what they have overlooked that the nurse has noticed . This may result in angering the

physician that may feel superior in comparison to the nurse. With that being said, it is the

duty to oversee all outcomes that make harm the patient. The reward is knowing that in

your own way whether being feeling inferior to the doctor , you helped an individual.

Nurses typically spend more time with patients than doctors. They check a

patient’s status throughout their shifts and decide how to treat sudden changes in their patients’ current conditions [2]. Changes in a patient’s status cannot wait for a physician ,

forcing nurses to make quick and critical decisions about the patient’s treatment [3]. In a

clinical practice both doctors and nurses engage in problem-solving and decision-making

activities on a daily basis. However, changes in technology and specialization have

When one first thinks of a reward, they think of receiving money or something of

higher value. I believe pursuing a nursing career is an equivalent of both. Not only do you

receive compensation for doing something you love. You get to make an impact on the

world. As well as make a difference in that individual’s life. In addition to that, the

schedule of a nurse is less trivial than one might expect. In many cases, nurses can craft

their own schedule to better fit their life [4]. If a prior engagement was to occur with a

nurse, he/she can trade shifts or talk to the nurse supervisor to accommodate one’s needs.

nurses are busy darting between hospital rooms, tending to the needs of their patients,

they are capable of managing themselves. In a study of 400 nurses during a 28-day

period, 10 percent of participants reported no opportunity to sit down or eat. Forty-three

percent of the time, nurses grabbed something to eat while responding to call lights
