Presently, Nicaragua is in stage three of the demographic transition model. There is a declining death rate, rapidly declining birth rate, and the natural increase rate is moderating. In this stage people are starting to have fewer children because education levels are increasing and contraception is being used more than ever before. The total fertility rate dropped from about 6 children per woman in 1980 to right around replacement level today.
