My ambition to study dental hygiene and therapy and to pursue it as a career path started during my time with a family friend who is a self-employed dentist. I learnt to appreciate how dental hygiene and therapy can improve the quality of people's lives, it is also a career that allows a great deal of scientific application therefore will enable me to make use of my scientific and manual skills. Working in the dentistry profession provides opportunities for enhanced study, whilst also securing and constructing a worthwhile career
My decision to continue to pursue dental hygiene and therapy was reinforced during my work experience at Wexham Dental Surgery. Here, I witnessed multiple procedures from simple examinations to much more complex procedures such as root canals, tooth crowning and teeth extraction, teeth scaling and root planning, and fillings on both primary and permanent teeth and also administration of local analgesia. Furthermore, I also observed and learnt how to process dental radiographs, also filing, organising and finding patient records and files

This experience also demonstrated to me that dentistry is highly dependent on having a good relationship and mutual understanding between dentist and patient, and not solely applying scientific knowledge, it is essential that a dental therapist …show more content…
