It wasn’t supposed to happen that way – The day was filled with the air of excitement as her teammates began to gather for the game. Jill never thought they would make it to the playoffs but here they were at Myrtle Beach. Always a fun place to visit nut no time for fun right now as the hard work was just beginning. She could hear her parents on the sidelines calling her name and cheering her on. So cool! At 16 years old Jill was a confident teen, proud of her accomplishments and getting to the playoffs was icing on the cake of her junior year. The unimaginable happened. As Jill was jumping up to return a volley she collapsed onto the sand. The crowd gasped, her teammates and coaches came over to her but Jiill was out cold. Her parents and medical team came running out onto the beach to check her out. The game was paused as they tried to determine what to do next. She wasn’t waking up. ***less about the game, more about the medical piece************* “Jill, how are you feeling today? It’s been a few days since you collapsed.” Dr. Penhale asked. For years she has been treated by the same pediatrician who also took care of half of the kids in her small rural town. Sure he was a bit older but wise and experienced so Jill and her parents felt they could trust him. Well, I’ve run some lab work and can’t seem to find a reason for Jill to pass out on Saturday while playing. Maybe she was dehydrated. You know the excitement of the tournament and that hot heat on the beach couldn’t have helped matters any. Once she was at the hospital and they gave her lots of fluids including potassium she rallied so I’m tending to think that was the issue and there’s not much else to look at or to worry
