Impressionism Impressionism was developed by Monet, Renoir, Pissaro, and Degas. It's characterized by subject and technique. Most are landscapes or urban scenes painted in vivid colors with rapid brushstrokes, giving paintings texture, rather than details. Women in the Garden This garden scene shows four people enjoying nature. The woman to the right is picking more flowers. The woman in the front is sitting on the ground, holding an umbrella to shade the sun. On the left, two women are observing a huge bouquet. All the figures are surrounded by trees, grass, and flowers. There's a little blue sky in the corner, but it's obvious that it's a sunny day. This painting has more detail with more defined brushstrokes, but still uses cool colors with a splash of warmth. The dresses the women are wearing are very elegant, based on the fashion in this time. They symbolize as a fantasy for Monet, because he wouldn't have been able to afford these. It allows the brain to fill in the gaps in the brushstrokes and each person to refine the picture in their own minds.
