Holocaust survivor Suzanne Butnik, born on the 26th of March year of 1939, born in Budapest, Hungary. According to Suzanne she is an only child to her Mother and Father, she and her Mother lived with her Mother's side of the family. During the war Suzanne explains that her Mother's side of the family was with them during the war in hiding. Shortly after Suzanne and her Mother came to America. Suzanne has a father who decided to immigrate to America when she was a newborn.
Ruth Posner born in 1933 in Warsaw, Poland. She was only 12 years old when World War II began. She lost both her mother and father in a matter of days and was stuck in the middle of the Holocaust all alone. Before her father passed away, he had been making a plan to ensure the safety of his child. He made sure that her aunt whose two children had already been killed by Nazis would be there for her and be by her side until death.
In the book Nineteen Minutes, Josie Cormier and her schoolmates were having a normal day of school when suddenly a school shooting began. Sterling police showed up and Detective Patrick Durchame headed in the school, ignoring protocol. Patrick looked throughout the school to find the shooter who turned out to be Peter Houghton, and Josie and Matt were found with him. Josie was still alive while Matt, Josie's boyfriend, was dead. There were ten people who died during the shooting.
In the poem Good Times by Lucille Clifton the speaker is a child that is comes from a low income family. Throughout the poem the speaker describes the good times by saying that the lights are back on and her mother has made bread. These seemly little events are the reasons why their family is drunk and dancing in the kitchen. Clifton exercises the use of repetition in her poem by repeating the phrase “good times”. By repeating this phrase numerous times throughout the poem it creates a theme, and causes the reader to focus on the good times.

During the story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain, the narrator receives a brief story from Simon Wheeler about the notorious Jim Smiley. A well-known gambler, he would make bets with anyone, he would let you get first pick, and he would remarkably come out the winner. Furthermore, he was lucky, and uncommonly lucky. Until one day was bilked and cheated when his opponent, a stranger, fed his frog quail shot and cost Jim Smiley to lose the bet. Moreover, Mark Twain uses third person limited to the reader understand the perspective from different people.
The Shirley Letters are a total of twenty three letters written by Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe to her sister named Molly. Louise uses the name “Shirley” as her writing name for these letters. These letters included the life of a woman (Shirley) in the mid eighteen hundreds during the California gold rush. She talks about how wild the miner 's life was during the time she lived in mining camps. The twenty three letters offer great insight on how life was back then during the gold rush of these miners, especially from a woman 's perspective being in a male dominated environment.
The Erlking by Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum confused me, even though the interpretation sounded interesting and fantastical. At first, I wondered if my confusion dealt with me not reading or hearing about “Der Erlkönig” before. After thinking that, I read the poem online; I really liked the poem because of creepy it is. I saw some correlations with Bynum’s version, but confusion still lingered in my head. I’m thinking a combination of the story structure and the lore (the fairies and elves) didn’t mix well with me.
Gail Halvorsen knew he had to do something about this so he decided to drop candy from his airplane (The Berlin). He told the kids that when they see a plane wiggling its wings, they will know its him and they should be prepared for candy to fall from the sky (The Berlin). When he dropped the candy, the children were screaming and yelling with joy, but they didn’t fight over it (The Berlin). They shared and made sure everyone got a piece of candy (The Berlin). When news broke to Gail’s boss, his boss was considering sending him home, but instead he allowed him to keep on doing it so it grew larger and more popular than it was before (The Berlin).
For the last few weeks I have been reading the book Shelter by Harlan Coben. Aforementioned Shelter, is about Mickey Bolitar, and his girlfriend Ashley. Throughout the book Ashley goes missing, and no one knows where she has gone, especially not Mickey. Mickey walks to a strange old lady's house, but everyone calls her Bat Lady. Bat lady tells Mickey that his father is alive, and Mickey doesn’t know what to think, because presumably he watched his dad die in a car crash.
In the novel titled, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Jacobs, wanted to write about her experiences as a slave and how she managed to escape from slavery. This novel can be entitled to many themes, but the theme that touched me the most was about all the slave women and how they were treated. I think that Jacobs emphasized how for slave women the situation was the worst because they were always viewed as sex objects. I believe that Harriet Jacobs thought that women were expected to obey their masters all the time and had so much responsibilities to do. Jacobs gave reference to all of this by providing her life events; for example when Dr. Flint told her, “you deserve it… to be under such treatment… forget the meaning of the word peace.”
In the short story ‘Birthday Box’ by Jane Yolen the theme is life can be tough. Two reasons why my theme is life can be tough are that her mom died and she lived in the hospital for a long time. One reason why my theme is life can be tough is that her mom died. For example, her mother died when she had just turned ten years old, so she was very heartbroken. Another example is when her mother died, she had to move in with her dad.
Last March, I came to realize that all of my focus was only on school, sports, and work and I didn't take the time to help out my community in enough ways as I should. I wanted to do something that I would enjoy and knew that I loved kids so I decided to email our elementary school principal and see if there was anything I could do to help out in the school. So ever since then, I started going in every Thursday to volunteer with whatever he needed me to do. Sometimes I would work for him, other times for the librarian, secretary, or other teachers.

Susan Abulhawa’s first novel Mornings In Jenin explores the 4 generations of a single Palestinian family, the Abulhejas, who existed before Israel was established in Palestine in the 1960s. In the small village of Ein Hod, Susan starts with a prominent farm and house owner, Yehja and Basima Abulheja, with their two sons – Hasan and Darweesh. Hasan weds a Bedouin girl, Dalia.
