Author Wilson Rawls published the novel “Where the Red Fern Grows” in 1961 as a unique and heart-warming novel. Around 12 and a half years after the novel was published, director Norman Tokar created the visual copy of the novel as a movie. Norman had spent many years making and studying movies like this, his genres were mainly drama and adventure. Both the movie and the Novel included the same story about a 12 year old boy named Billy Portman who loves the outdoors and loves animals. Billy badly wanted dogs so he worked hard selling berries to fishermen for 2 years to gain a total of $50 so he could buy two Redbone Hounds to Coon hunt with (this was Billys passion). The first point I have is at the start of the movie there was no dog fight rather than the book which did include this point. This was crucial in the movie because with this point it would have shown Billy's love and compassion about dogs from the start (pg # 1 - 4). Billy says, “ Come on, boy, let's go home and get something to eat.” (Wilson Rawls pg # 3) This clearly shows his love for dogs. This part in the novel was very detailed and fascinating. Another point to prove that the novel is better is the settings, is when he was at the Coon hunt. When he was at the coon hunt championships the part in the novel was more detailed and had more information. The movie didn't show all of Billy's Coons that he had caught at the competition. This part in the book was fascinating to read because you didn't know what would happen next, for example there was a snowstorm that happened during the championships. (pg # 95-112) The last point I have to prove the settings in the novel were better is that In the movie Billy just goes to the station and gets his dog and arrives home. In the movie this part does not have much detail and information, for example in the book when Billy's on his way home he comes across a school he finally got to see what a school looked like. When Billy crosses the school and gets bullied and beaten up by a few kids. One of the kids at the school says, “Oh, you're a hillbilly.” ( Wilson Rawls pg # 18) This part shows how Billy got bullied because of how poor Billy 's family was and how they couldn't afford school and education for Billy and his sisters. This part was very fascinating and detailed, and would have made the movie better if they included this
