Verbal Punishment, Withholding, using of Logical Consequences, Grounding, and Isolation are several forms of punishment by parents to their children. But, the most common form of punishment used by Filipino parents is Corporal or Physical Punishment. Corporal punishment comes in different forms, there is teachers punishing students as discipline, and then there is the most common form of corporal punishment which is the punishment administered by parents. This kind of discipline makes use of bodily force for the purpose of correcting a child’s behavior and shaping his/her character, as well as instill discipline as they grow. On the other hand, there are a number of reasons why Corporal Punishment is more effective than any other forms of punishment. Corporal punishment instills fear to the children, for them not to commit their mistakes again. But then, scholars argue that the power of physical punishment does not really instill discipline but provokes resentment and further misbehavior. They should keep in mind that in order for their children to be well-mannered, they themselves should be a good role model to their children. The disadvantages of corporal punishment outweigh its benefits. Instead of promoting good behavior, discipline, and self-control, corporal punishment creates adverse effects. Parents have enfolded tradition by using such practice, but evidence through the years advises that corporal punishment is one tradition that needs to end.
