What is a Union?
A union is a formal association of workers that promotes the interests of its members through collective action . Labour or trade union aims to improve employees’ lives by bringing economic justice to the workplace and ensuring that all employees receive fair treatment. It is essential for the management team and union officials to create and maintain a healthy work-relationship in order to prevent and resolve potential disputes.

Benefits of belonging to a Union
Joining a union has many of its advantages. As a union member, employee has a collective voice over any issue at work such as wages, the working condition and environment, and benefits. In general, union members tend to receive more benefits and higher wages than non-union members.

On average, union members’ wages are 30% higher compared to their non-union counterparts and only 14% of non-union members have guaranteed pensions, fully 68% of union members do. In addition, more than 97% of union members have benefitted from health insurance but only 85% of non-union members do . Hence, unions are sometimes associated with higher productivity although management have to find labour-saving ways of doing work to offset the higher labour costs.

A union, which works like a democracy, holds elections for officers who make decisions on behalf of members.
