We all know that in America today, not everyone is treated equally. People discriminate by gender, race, sexual orientation and other factors. One of the places that you will see this discrimination is in the workplace. Women have come along way in the workplace but unfortunately there is still discrimination. Women still get paid less than their male counterparts just because of their gender.
Historically women haven’t even had jobs. They were expected to stay at home and take care of the household. According to the United States Department of Labor, women make up 47% of today’s U.S. labor force (United States Department of Labor, 2014). Nationally, women make 79% of what men make (Hill, 2015). That means for every dollar that a man gets paid, a woman with the same qualifications will only receive 79 cents. You may think that it is only 11 cents, but think about it in a yearly salary way. If a man were to get paid $150,000 per year, a woman would only get paid $118,500. That is a $31,500 difference in pay just because of their gender, which is something that they can not change.
There is also an even larger pay gap for women of different nationalities. “Black women make 64 cents and Latinas make 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white man (O'Brien, 2015).” It is amazing to me that just because of their nationality and gender, neither of which were chosen by them, they are being paid less than a white man. These women have an even tougher time supplying for their families than just a woman.
Even though men are culturally seen as the main income of the house, some households are not run that way. According to the Department of Labor, “In almost two-thirds of families led by single mothers or two parents, mothers are either the primary or co-breadwinner (The White House).” This means that some families rely on a women’s income, who is less than a mans, to supply for their family.
