Now I am going to explain the key legislations and regulations that have an impact on tourism. Starting with ATOL, ATOL is a short cut for The Air Travel Operators' Licensing “scheme which was introduced in the early 1970s to protect holidaymakers against the risk of their package tour operator becoming insolvent”. (L. Ellman, 2012, p3). Every UK travel company which sells holidays and flights must hold an ATOL because it protects customers who had booked holidays with the firm. It ensures that the people do not get left abroad or lose their money. The scheme is there to let consumers know that their money is safe with the airline that they booked with, and will provide help in the event of a failure. It's important to keep ATOL Certificate somewhere safe and take it on holiday with you in case you need it. Next I am going to explain ABTA which stands for Association of British Travel Agents Ltd. ABTA is the UK’s largest travel association, representing travel agents and tour operators that sell billion of holidays and other travel arrangements each year. All package holidays that are being sold to people in the UK by ABTA are protected financially in the event of a company failure, what this means is that for example if your travel company goes out of business, ABTA will have a quick process for you to follow, so you can continue your holiday as planned or get your money back if you are not satisfied.
