Discuss The Pros And Cons Of Privatization Of Public Services

As I reviewed our class power PowerPoint on Urban services and literature about the pros and cons of privatization of public services. The groups I was in discussed the pros and cons of privatization and we seemed to all have different ideas of what public services should be. We also discussed the need for certain services in a city the size of San Antonio and what the goals were for having these urban delivery services. I personally believe, there could be a privatization of transportation services but I am on the fence of whether solid waste management and water and sanitation should be deemed private.
Solid Waste Management, Water and Sanitation is a huge necessity for a large city like San Antonio. These urban services affect citizens on an everyday basis. Taking away these services could cause a lot of chaos to the city. If San Antonio were to privatize any of these urban services- the main concern I believe would bring to the city would be the loss of jobs. It would allow for the city's government to find a company that is a good fit and would be able serve the needs of every citizen who uses these everyday urban services. My group and I discussed that it was very optimistic of us to hope that our city's government would pick a company that would treat citizens fairly- but we could easily be wrong. A con that we found is that privatizing urban services could lead to bad services for the city's services. Since the company would be working as a single entity, it would be able to set its own prices, conditions on their own accord. This is a con that has very slim chances of actually happening but we thought it was important to bring up while we were discussing amongst one another. We thought it was important to visit every avenue of how privatizing could affect everyone
