As stated in the previous chapter connection, there are many challenges that stand in the way of urban education. The main issue discussed in chapter 10 of the book “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education” by Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode, was the issue of bilingual programs never having enough support by schools. In addition “bilingual teachers have been segregated programmatically and physically from other staff members, making both teachers and students feel isolated from the community (p.380)”. This issue has always been highly debated because while some people believe bilingual programs work, others believe the opposite. Regardless of who is right or wrong, the truth is that we live in a country that
1.2 Diversity in the United States People have always been migrating all around the world to find their place on the Earth. There are a lots of reasons why people change left their homelands and move their lives to different region of the world. Sometimes they are forced to migrate because of political situation or religious persecutions in their homeland and sometime they just want to escape from poverty, dream about get their standards of life better. Many of immigrants have been arriving and still are arriving to the United States attracted by the vision of start a new better life , make a career, make “the American Dream” come true. United States have always been perceived as a country of big opportunities , a place where everybody
The story of Misty Copeland has always interested me in many ways. I may not be an African American but the thought of her not being extremely skinny and still making her way up to principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre has encouraged me to accept my body the way it is and just dance from the heart. She has shown the world what it’s like to follow your own path no matter what road you take to get there. “Dancing Toward Diversity”, talks about Copeland in a very positive way. She’s been given so many opportunities to make dancers aware of the problems with diversity in ballet, even so far as the American Ballet Theatre creating scholarships for kids of color to help pay for them to attend their summer intensives.
I come from a military background which required me to do a lot of traveling as a child. I lived in Sicily, Italy for about four and a half years before moving back to the United States. Living in two different countries made me flexibility and tolerant which allows me to adapt and respect others cultures while maintaining my own. These qualities proved to be beneficial this previous summer while studying abroad Japan. I find these qualities essential especially for someone seeking to teach abroad, I feel any great teacher should first be a student themselves.
The Bronx is a community that is diverse. It is filled with people from different backgrounds that with different issues. This biggest misconception of the Bronx is that it is a community that does not help each other when in need. The borough does not have the glamour of Manhattan or the beaches of Staten Island, but what it does have is a community that is willing to help those in need. Part of the Solution has been committed to helping those who are struggling financially for more than 30 years.
In a terrifying dystopia, “People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think” (Huxley 1). Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, shows the starkness of a world where uniformity is paramount and diversity is despised as the root of instability. No one thinks for themselves, but instead they simple echo what they have been programmed to say. Every person is bred to act and think the same as others in their social class. Diversity is shunned along with old world beliefs and conservative morals.
Diversity Scholarship Essay How will you contribute to the diversity at the University of Kentucky? For some time of my life, I never considered myself diverse. To me during that time growing up, I thought to be a part of the diverse minority it meant that you did not belong.
Have you ever imagined a great America again? One where our diversity made us the greatest country as it once was. Our actions and attitude can make America the great country it one was, so that all of our diversity that makes up our country is accepted. Our country was based on “the melting pot.” Also our country was compared as “the heirs of all time.”
In the article “Driving Economic Diversity” by Matt Zalaznick, several colleges/universities were highlighted that are taking unique approaches to help minority. Several college and university campuses are partnering locally and using new ideas to diversify campus suppliers. Kent State University in Ohio, Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City Missouri and Drexel University in Philadelphia were highlighted in the article. Veronica Cook-Euell serves as the manager of the Kent State Supplier Diversity Program. Her program is using technology and has developed an online database that lists diverse suppliers.
A greedy, money-consuming, and lethargic person most likely comes to mind when one thinks of the characteristics of an American. We have somehow managed to earn the stereotype that we abuse our freedom and use it to our advantage. While this may be true to a certain extent, it seems people always forget the positive connotations that contribute to the qualities of a true American. The freedom the United States has is something we gained through hard work and dedication and is nothing to be taken for granted. Despite the stereotypical definition it is most commonly deceived as, an American is someone who supports and lives through the ideas of equality, patriotism, freedom and society while overcoming everyday diversity.
Diversity is a topic that is very sensitive to society today unfortunately there are people out there who take it to extremes. It’s the uniqueness of an individual who are different in their own way rather it is race, ethnicity, gender, beliefs, and social standing. However, people see others who are different as an alien basically in our society. America is made up of various ethnicities, race, etc basically we are a mixed breed or a mutt, Different cultures came to America to escape the wars and fights that were going on in their country. Our country represents freedom but instead of working together we are fighting each other for being different such as enslaving African Americans.
This is a rather drastic change for America, and unfortunately not everyone is welcoming to this change. This reluctance, paired with the need for acceptance, will play a critical role in shaping the social and political landscape in the future and will be a major part in many people’s lives. This change in racial denominations within America has already affected our country, with people’s resentment towards the situation leading to the election of president Trump. As with all changes, eventually racial diversity and mixing of races will just be a basic fact of life for everyone, as it already is for many people, but it will take time and effort to get to that
In this world the diversity and separation of race/culture is so high. It’s hard to think that we all came from one place one point in time. People came up with the idea to divide cultures and this has immediately caused many of troubles. With this diversity people start to hate where they came from and some people become proud of where they come from. Although pride for one country can be good many people have taken it to the extreme and this tends to have a negative effect on the way we treat people from other nations.
The cultural diversity in my country has always been a sign of identity. Since kindergarten, the teachers would explain the cultural merge between the Spanish, Africans, Indians, and Americans that identified me as Puerto Rican. There, I understood each country’s customs were as important as the next one, and they complimented each other into my lifestyle. Thanks to early education, I comprehended that diversity was almost a synonym of Puerto Rican. When I started to learn about the American history, I could not understand how people would reject black people just because of their skin color or beliefs.
