The 1950's consisted of rapid changes for almost all populations. Rural areas started to become vacant while cities were over populated, and suburbs became the primary way of life. During this time, New Orleans upheld America's idealistic image of a "melting-pot." According to history today, a melting pot is a "location in which a variety of cultures, theories, styles and people are mixed into one. " Diversity was widespread during New Orleans in the 1950's where majority of the population were of European and African descent.
New York is America’s “quintessential immigrant city, with a long history of ethnic succession and immigrant inclusion” (Foner 2007 pg. 1001). Since 1900, 10%, or more, of America’s foreign-born population has lived in New York City. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the city served as the major entry place for Southern and Eastern European immigrants. Moreover, New York has been dramatically changed, and dramatically benefited, by massive immigration inflows in the past few decades. Immigration was a crucial factor in New York’s recovery from the devastating financial crisis of 1975.
In my town, Scarsdale, NY never really provides a way to experience diversity. It's a monocultural town which consist of predominately white-jewish kids. This makes me cherish the opportunities that I do have to meet new different people, and experience other cultures. This is one of the main reasons I want to switch coasts of the US. The fact that there is such a cultural discrepancy between the east coast and the west coast is something that is really exciting to me.
Similarly to Texas, California was annexed by the U.S. after the Mexican War in 1846. While U.S. took the opportunity to discovered California, many immigrants see it as a golden land and a place to live their successful life. California is known for diversity from newcomer immigrants compare from food to cultures. Who is your favourite food? Mine is Pho and Taco.
In a terrifying dystopia, “People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think” (Huxley 1). Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, shows the starkness of a world where uniformity is paramount and diversity is despised as the root of instability. No one thinks for themselves, but instead they simple echo what they have been programmed to say. Every person is bred to act and think the same as others in their social class. Diversity is shunned along with old world beliefs and conservative morals.
Growing up in Miami, one of the most diverse cities in the world, has taught me a few things about diversity. Even in Miami, I have always been the only Persian in my diverse group of friends which includes a Mexican, two Indian twins, two Egyptian twins, and a Jew. Our Saturday night conversations consisted of comparing our cultures, founding out the similarities and differences between our languages and cuisines, and learning about each other 's customs. A typical sleepover included gorging down my mother 's Ghormeh Sabzi, a specialty Persian stew, while watching a Bollywood film. I 've been exposed to so many aspects of various human cultures, and I 'm still yearning to learn more.
The city of New York has been a place of immigration since the beginning and is the most diverse area in the country. Looking closer we find that Queens is the most diverse borough of the city (Starr, 2015), with Astoria as the most diverse neighborhood. There are multiple immigrants from multiple origins and many of those immigrants in Queens originate from Asia, more specifically China. The highest concentration of Chinese immigrants is in Main Street, Flushing, often called the other Chinatown of New York.
One of my favorite parts of Rutgers University is the ability to meet people that may live only 20 minutes away but have experiences that are a complete contrast to your own. During my first-year at Rutgers University I thought I knew what diversity was, I was raised in Jersey City, one of the most diverse cities in the nation, so when I came to Rutgers I did not expect to find more diversity. At Rutgers, I have had the opportunity to meet people that are not just diverse in culture but also in age and experience. Here I have met a non-traditional student who graduated almost a decade ago and came back to get a second degree after finding a new passion. I have had the opportunity to grow closer with intriguing people such as a triplet, a professional photographer, and a professor who is deaf but defied the odds
Do you know South High School is the most diverse school in the Denver area and also, do you know South represents more than 42 different cultures and countries. In addition to that, South honors the different cultures every year by hosting Culture Fest and welcomes parents and neighbors to the event. Currently, 72% of the students at South are students of color and most of the students come from the Aurora side to experience diversity and more opportunity. Frankly, South accepts students from all the districts of Denver Public School and other districts as well. South provides cheaper transportation pass to students who come from outside of Denver and gives free bus pass to students who live in Denver.
Diversity in the united state has been extended to a broader understanding of what diversity really means. Diversity first meaning is that positions should not be segregated by gender. For example a board of directors should have women on the board and there should be a male as the receptionists. Next be the diversity of wide range of ethnicities like Asian, Hispanics, etc., religions national origins, class. For example people from poor and rich should both be represented.
I am deciding to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison because I am intrigued by the opportunities the university has to offer. During my time at UW-Madison I hope to participate in intramural sports, get a job, receive an excellent education, and much more. The city life offers a diverse culture and allows you to learn about and to appreciate life. As I want to be a part of the nursing program I would utilize the opportunity to work at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and to work alongside other students trying to achieve the same goal as I am.
But, living in a multicultural city is by itself a very beneficial exercise not only on a personal level but also in terms of cultural exchange, economic exchange and generating new ideas. One experiences what is called cultural variety when living in a diverse area. He is somehow introduced to new kinds of foods, architectures, arts, music, festivals, religions, mythologies, writings and more of general day-to-day life. These new things would easily open one’s heart and mind to new places, new ideas and new people. According to (Wolfstone, 2010) nowadays all people around the world happily go out and eat Chinese food, use Japanese technology, drive German
