Diversity can be defined in several ways. But, I define it as people coming together from different races, nationalities, religion and sexes to form a group, organization or community. A diverse group or organization value the difference in others. And when diversity is within the workplace, and academics, there are many different benefits. It can increase the income mobility within the workplace. And also increase productivities, creativity and solves problems faster, market shares and create a satisfied diverse customer base. With academics, going to either an elementary, high school, or college can help you become more diverse in life. With being at college, a diverse campus can help you adjust faster. Stereotypes is a widely held but fixed oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing(wiki definition). Stereotypes within the workplace can cause income mobility to decrease. On the website, Infoplease.com, there is a diagram that lists the different wages between race and sexes. It states that even though white males make hundred percent of the payment, white women only make seventy-eight percent of the white males payment. And even black males make less than white women at seventy-five percent. While a hispanic male make just a little more than half of what a white male makes(Infoplease.com). I feel that this causes income mobility to decrease because if everyone is not making the same amount of money then others, this discourages other to complete their jobs and quit to look for new jobs. With a new job, they could start with a low income again, making it hard to with a well life. But when companies are diverse, there are many benefits for them. For me, choosing a college was a personal choice for me to make because it is important for me to be comfortable and enjoy the experience. Being on college campuses where there is a mix of people with different backgrounds and different interests will educate you and allow you to meet people you may have not met had you gone to a less diverse college. Another benefit is that you’ll be more prepared for life after graduation. Once you graduate from college, you’re headed into the real world.
