Sex trafficking is becoming more and more frequent without most people even realizing it. According to “DoSomething.org”, there are about 20-30 million slaves in the world today. 30,000 of these people die every year from neglect, abuse, and torture (56 Interesting Facts). Human trafficking is the third largest crime industry, making 32 billion dollars every year (11 Facts). In the novel, Lottie recognizes a billboard for helping women who have been trafficked.
A Netflix documentary called “Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story” tells the story of a woman named Cyntoia Brown who was sentenced to life in prison after she killed a man who paid her for sex when she was 16. This film investigates what led up to her committing the crime, her trial and how she eventually redeemed herself while gaining freedom. It also exposes many problems with our nation's approach towards sexual exploitation, trauma and criminal justice systems. The historical aspect here deals mainly with sex trafficking issues that have always been prevalent among young girls all over this country. The case of Cyntoia is just one sad illustration showing us how such vulnerable individuals might easily slip through society’s cracks into perilous situations, ending up with
Sex trafficking, a type of gender-based violence, continues to be a growing issue in the world today. Women are most susceptible to this type of gender-based violence. They are forced into prostitution and slave-like situations. The book Half the Sky, gives several examples of women who have been victims of this violence. The authors, Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, also explain ways in which we can lead these victims to a brighter future and to an escape from modern day slavery.
The information included in incidents in the life of a Slave girl reveals the nature of slavery as inhumane and cruel. Slavery, as it is evident from the text, has significantly affected the southern area. Many women became a victim of sexual harassment and were mistreated by slave owners. The people of the south especially the slaves had to work hard in the fields. Slaves were viewed as fugitive and every day suffered from their cruel masters.
It is really perturbing that when suddenly when driving into a certain neighborhood, or street, and in a specific time of night, you see various women slowly starting to appear walking in the night. While children wonder why those women are out so late, and parents try unsuccessfully to distract them from the situation, no one truly dares to change anything. Most just simple choose to look away, not aware of the horrors these people face. The sole idea of one’s own family members in this industry, would make anyone’s skin crawl. Sex trafficking has stained society’s history, present, and sadly, it’s future.
According to the article “Hotline Statistics,” in 2016 alone, there were 1,057 reported cases of human trafficking related to labor work with a total of 7,572 cases of trafficking. Regardless of the 1,057 individuals that were trafficked for labor, there isn’t a lot of awareness in regards to this problem. However, Noy Thrupkaew, the speaker of Human trafficking is all around you. This is how it works, talks about the reality of slaves in our lives; whether they are sold into labor or used for sex, and the eye opening statistics that are related to the labor trade. In addition, the excerpt “‘Guests’ in the fields,” is written about migrants, who are working towards a better life, and get caught in the snare that is human trafficking.
John is an owner of a Brothel that he labels as ‘instant sex’ and is for the epidemic of Human Trafficking. He uses the title ‘instant sex’ as it is a way of ensuring gradification, and also remittances as a way of trying to justify his perspective and choice. He sees Human trafficking as a demand that needs to be supplied. John states that when there is a shortage of dancers within his club he imports new victims and by doing so he is bringing interest into the club this creates an economic factor within the industry. The draw point that the ‘John’s’ will use to ensnare the girls is the false promise of sending money back to the families.
Many women around the world, not only in Asia, have to endure this annually, some having no hope of being saved. It is a horrible situation because It shows the experience of multiple different horrors that nobody can ever imagine. The next quote shows what horrors Nepali girls have to endure if they get forced into prostitution, particularly the abuse they have to face if they want to escape ”But if you try to run away, I will grind hot chilies and put them in your private parts”(McCormick 133). 12,000 Nepali girls are put into the sex trade every year and this quote shows one of the horrors that the girls have to deal with. This is not something that anyone has to go through just because they’re poor and need the money, the suffering endured in the sex trade is even worse than being poor.
In the documentary, Children for Sale: The fight to end sex trafficking, Jada Pinket-Smith explores sex trafficking in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Pinket-Smith took to Atlanta with her T.V. crew from CNN to speak with underage children that was exploited and took advantage of by human traffickers. She conducted interviews along with CNN Projects with Sergeant Torrey Kennedy a supervisor at Dekalb County Police Department Special Victims, and Internet Crimes Against Children, and Lisa Williams the Founder and executive director of Living Water for Girls and the Learning Resource Center. In addition, they interviewed two young ladies named Sacharay and Rachel McCool, former sex slaves, Kasey McClure a motivator, and Dalie Racine, the assistance district attorney in Dekalb County. This documentary discussed the terms used in the sex slave trade industry.
