They should feel that school is a safe place and they should feel protected. They should be able to wear what they want and express themselves at school. Schools should not have a dress code because, students would not be able to express themselves, they can be quite expensive, and there have been no facts that dress codes made misbehavior and inappropriate conduct go down. Shirts, pants, socks, and shoes add up quickly so it is not a surprise to find that the average cost of the four can be up to $249.
School Dress codes do not allow students to completely express their individuality. Schools want students to be able to think for themselves and create a sense of who they are, but it is not easy when they are forced to abide by rules that take away from from that. It should be a place of expressing ourselves freely in a learning environment without having to worry about what we wear as an interfering issue. We are writing you with the purpose of bringing the sexist nature of many school dress codes to your attention. There are many schools that still have dress codes in place where young girls’ bodies are continually sexualized and objectified. The idea that any “inappropriate” amount of skin will hinder the education and focus of boys around them is driven into the minds of young girls from the time they start expressing themselves through their clothing.
