It Takes a College Student to Drink Like One Yes, I am still a college student and yes, I do think that the drinking age should be lowered to age 18. When individuals think of college, the first thing that comes to mind for many is drinking. Every movie about college portrays crazy parties with keg stands, shots, beer, and excessively drunk students. Rarely do movies show college kids having a casual drink with their friends at dinner or in their room. College drinking is normally centered around students binge drinking. College is the time that students are away from their parents and many students feel as though they have independence for the first time in their lives. While this independence is important, it can have harmful effects when it comes to alcohol.
The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. However, on college campuses, this drinking age is often disregarded. Fraternity parties don’t check IDs upon entry, bars often let college students in with fake IDs and older, legal students can easily buy younger students drinks. Students normally enter college at age 18, meaning they have three years until they can legally consume alcohol. This law …show more content…

When looking at the drinking age of the United States, it changed from being a state chosen age to a national age of 21 in the 1980’s. Currently, it is 2018, which is over 30 years since the change. The switch from 18 to 21 was an important one at the time, it has not been reevaluated since then. Lifestyles have drastically changed over those 30 years and it needs to be reevaluated. Also, it has been shown that by increasing the drinking age, it has had little effect on the number of alcohol related traffic incidents. In addition to having little effect on alcohol induced car accidents, it has also created a culture of binge drinking and a harmful alcohol
