How we ensure that the new driving test is fair for people with disabilities

The new driving test will be with us in a matter of months, and we want everyone who’s capable of driving a vehicle safely to have a driving licence. We’ve ensured that when we made the changes to the driving test, we involved a number of organisations which represent people with disabilities, such as autistic spectrum disabilities, deafness or dyslexia to ensure that we get it right.

Having to take the practical driving test is enough to make most of us nervous, most people get there in the end, but in the meantime it’s a big part of your life. There’s no way that the level of the driving test should be lowered for anyone, the test must ensure that everyone on the roads can drive a vehicle by themselves to the standard set. However, we aim to make the driving test a fair test for all, whether candidates have a disability or not.

Positive Feedback

One piece of feedback that we received went on to confirm that we had got it right in this regard, was from Peter Scott who is the Chairman of the Leeds group at the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Joint National Council. He’s also an avid supporter of disability driving and said the following after his visit to DVSA Cardington to discuss the the new test:
