In high schools, there are required documentations made by the state for teachers and staff to follow regarding every student personal needs. This is called the Individualized Education Plan and/or 504 Plan. (I.E.P.) What that means, is that high schools by law not only have to have a personalized accommodations to students, but also, “the school has to provide evaluation with no cost to the students” (Bowman & Jaeger 14). The form focuses on whether a student is eligible for services based on specific disability categories in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The ADA is a civil rights act that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. ADA deferred from section 504 because it covers any business with more than 15 employees, as well as most private institutions in state and local governments (Yellin and Bertsh, 25). ADA applies to a lot of schools such as preschool and daycare program but does not contain a child by obligation, ADA applies to almost every school and most workplaces. ADA offers a general section for individuals with disabilities or who are perceived to have a disability. "The 2008 amendments to the ADA are of key important to students with disabilities who will be relying on the ADA in section 504 is the basic of their accommodations in college, post graduate education and in the workplace" (Yellin and Bertsch 25). Students with disabilities must be able to self-identify to the Office of Disability Services. They need to take the initiative to go to the different offices to make sure the university has the proper testing tools and resources available to meet their required needs. They also have to take into consideration the cost associated with the assets they have to use in order to succeed in college, because they are held accountable for all funds and they no longer have free access to the evaluations and testing.
