I want to be the next drum major, because I feel that I’m ready to take on the position and I feel that being the next drum major will help me work towards my future goals in life. I have grown as a leader and learned many different techniques that have helped me develop as a better leader. With the 2017-2018 season wrapping up, I feel that I wasn’t ready and didn’t fully commit to the standards of a drum major. Now, I feel that I’m ready to the take on the position to grow better musicianship and leadership skills. When I graduate, I want to be a drum major of a college marching band and go to school to become a band director. I think I’ve developed a good conducting style and I’ve developed a better sense of mood while conducting various tempos and dynamics. I make sure I’m organized and prepared for all rehearsals and I make sure to keep equipment organized for the sake of our entire band. I have a good sense of punctuality and I tend to arrive early for rehearsals and competitions and I feel that I’ve learned many new tips for when I lead the band from the previous season. I’m also experienced in all of the sections in the band and I continue to work hard to maintain a great understanding of the various instruments. A weakness that I note is that I’m somewhat shy to the newer band members and I’m quiet when I want to say something, because I feel that I’m not alloted the chance to speak. I plan to get to know each of the newer members and I plan to speak out more this season. As a drum major, it’s needed to speak and give directions. I have started speaking out more and I plan to fulfill this duty and conquer this weakness before the start of parade rehearsals.
I love being in band because it’s an activity where I can thrive as a musician, share my passions, show my work, build a team, and make a family outside of school. Band allows for me to relax and release myself, my emotions, and suchlike into an art form that I get to share with my band. Life wouldn’t be life without band.
