Edgar Allan Poe is definitely a writer that stands out from the rest. He wrote many things that were nightmarish at times but also heartbreaking. Over his lifetime, Poe struggled with heartbreak, loss, and extreme sadness; this was all evident in his writings. Fortunately, he lived in an era that would accept and praise him for this kind of writing. Because of that, Edgar Allan Poe was easily one of the most influential writers of the eighteenth century. Poe was born on January 19, 1809, a middle child, to actor parents who were constantly traveling. Unfortunately, his father left him and by the age of three both his mother and father were dead. He did very well there but Mr. Allan did not send him away with enough money (they constantly fought about money). As a result, Poe began gambling to try and attain money and even began burning his own furniture to keep warm. He was so miserable and depressed that he decided to sign up for the US army. During his time there, he was sent back to Richmond because it was revealed to him that Mrs. Allan was dying of Tuberculosis. By the time he returned home, Mrs. Allan was already dead and all that was left was Mr. Allan. They had a falling out so Poe decided to rejoin the military at West Point. This unexpected guest is a black raven and the man has many suspicions about it. At first, he believes that the raven is a sign from his deceased wife but as time went on he believed that the bird was an evil prophet. By the end, the man wants the raven to leave him but the bird responds “nevermore” and so the man feels that he will always live in the raven’s shadow.
