Edgar Allan Poe was an American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor who is well-known for inventing the detective genre, and his overall contribution to American literature. He was born on January 12, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts to the actors Elizabeth and David Poe. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was just three years old and his father abandoned his family. Poe and his siblings were then separated to live with different families. He was adopted by the Mr. and Mrs. John Allan. The details of his private life are mystified with reports of heavy drinking, gambling, drug addition, and other behavioural disorders.
