“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before”. This is a quote from Edgar Allan Poe, this quote represents what his poems and short stories are like they are twisted and dark. He experiences misfortune at a very young age when he lost his parents at the age of two, this is believed to be the reason he writes such cruel pieces. Poe is a well-known writer, editor, and critic. He is well known for his poetry and also his short stories, especially the ones with mystery. His dark and twisted childhood with much tragedy has had a direct impact on his stories which have made him the well-known author he is today. By the time Poe was 18 years old, he had no money, had been thrown out by his father John, and also had no job skills. With nowhere else to go Poe went to Boston and joined the army. He was fairly successful in the army as he ranked a sergeant major. During this time Mrs. Allen died, Poe’s adopted mother. Soon after her death, John started to try to be nicer to Edgar. One of the things John did to try to win Edgar's friendship is he signed his application to West Point, which is a United States Military Academy. After Poe was accepted to West Point he began training to be an officer in the military. Poe’s time at West Point was very brief because John refused to send him money so Edgar was dismissed from the University. Becoming an author was a struggle for Edgar when he moved to New York City to publish his work in 1831. Poe submitted his work to many different magazines, but all of them were turned down. In New York Poe had no job, no money, and he was in serious financial trouble. He reached out to his father's help which he never received. John died in 1834 and never
