Joshua Pendleton Justin Stowe College Planning 1/7/16 Edgar Allan Poe: Father of Detective Story Edgar Allan Poe as many know was a famous poet and short story writer. He was known for the gory horror stories and poems he created. He himself had a very interesting and a somewhat mysterious end which remains a mystery to this day. Edgar Allen Poe was the son of two actors. But sadly he never really knew either of them. For his mother died while he was just three and his dad left her before that. So not having any parents left willing to take care of him, he went to live with a successful tobacco merchant by the name of John Allan. Even back then living with them he would write poems for them to read. But sadly neither Poe nor John were very successful with money. Most of his works were of mystery and murders. One of his more popular works is called, “Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque,” which was not just one story but a collection of stories he wrote. Some of those included in this were the, “Fall of the House of Usher, Ligeia, and William Wilson. As stated before most of these were about murders and mystery. He might have written these gruesome tales of murder because of his life style. He was always sad and as said before he was an alcoholic. So I believe that that definitely contributed to his stories not being so nice. One of his works called “The Tell Tale Heart” tells the story of murderer who hated a mans blind eye. So he murdered him. He put the body under the floor boards in a way where the blood would not seep out. But when the cops came he thought he was hearing the heart beating from beneath the floor boards. Even though he had the police completely fooled he confessed and showed them what he had done.
