To begin with, we can notice many similarities between United Kingdom and United States’ education systems, but many differences as well.
First of all, in United Kingdom, the Local Education Authority is in charge of Education in every country. Otherwise, in United States, Education is provided in each state by education boards since there is no national education system.
Moreover, public schools in United Kingdom are called state schools, which are free because they are paid by public funds. We can notice a similarity with United States since “public education from kindergarten through grade 12 is tax-supported; no tuition is required” (Ramos, 2015, p.1). Hence, we can say that everyone pays for public education in both countries. Americans devote this time to play, to learn how to behave, etc., but it is not compulsary to go to school until they are 6 years old, as in the case of Spain.
In Primary Education there are some differences between both countries. In United Kingdom, this stage ranges from 5 to 11 years old. In United States there are different grades and, in this stage, they range from 1 to 6, which would be equal to ages 6 to 12. In addition, in United Kingdom, “the National Curriculum has established three core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science and seven other foundation subjects: Technology (including design), History, Geography (…)” (Ramos, 2015, p.1).
