Educational Philosophy Statement

I believe that education is a unique experience for every child that enters the classroom. As a teacher, I am responsible for establishing a successful learning environment. There are three elements that are conducive to the environment I strive for; teaching as a guide, creating a community, and using preventative and supportive behavior strategies. My teaching role is to guide my students and provide access to information rather than acting as the source of information. Children have become accustomed to simply search for the right answer and be done. The students will learn best by having to find the answer to their questions themselves through discovery and problem solving. I will also teach my students that when I ask them a question it's alright if they say, "I don't know." I do not want a child to feel bad …show more content…

A safe space is one that allows students to feel at ease to express themselves, share experiences, and discuss differences of opinion. Children learn best when they feel they are part of a community, where everyone feels accepted and individually encouraged. I show my students that the classroom is a community through trust, predictability, and parent involvement. Children know that they can trust me when they are shown eye contact, listening, and acknowledgement. Having a calm acceptance of children’s feelings goes a long way towards letting a child know that the classroom is safe. Also, establishing predictable routines helps children know what to expect and makes them feel confident in their community. An example of predictability in my classroom would be a schedule of the day so that students are aware of what comes next or when they can go home. Lastly, family involvement is one of the most special ways to help create a community. Connecting with families daily, involving them on field trips, volunteering, or placing a family photo up in the classroom are all ways that can involve
