Imagine yourself in kindergarten. The teachers, surroundings, and curriculum are a foreign territory. You’re nervous and fearful of the unknown. Will I make friends? Will the teacher be nice? Now imagine that you don’t speak the same language as everyone else. Not only is everything new to you, but you don’t understand what is being said to you. You can understand small words and phrases but communication is slim. Without understanding the language, how will you learn?
My goal as a English as a Second Language teacher is to reach these students. It can be frustrating to not understand what is being taught, but it can be even more frustrating to not even understand the language. I will reach these student by combining my education and past experiences to be as effective of a teacher as I possibly can.

My hometown has a significant hispanic population that has given me the opportunity to learn a different culture. I have gotten to spend time in an elementary classroom that has many hispanic students. I have been able to see firsthand the struggle that hispanic students can have when trying to learn. As a ESL teacher, I will address these struggles and attempt to make school easier for these students.
My first goal is to understand the culture. By understanding the culture and using my past experiences, I will be able to apply what they are learning and fit it into the students culture. I will achieve this goal by taking advantage of the opportunities I am given while in college.
