What is elderly abuse, and why do they get miss-treated by family members; what strategies can be applied to put an end to this problem? Elderly abuse is when someone physically, mentally, or financially take advantage of the elderly with intent to harm them. Most of these abuser are they’re own family members that are currently caring for them, usually those in the early 50’s or baby boomers; or a senior dwelling home care facility that was selected by family members to care for them. While most of these children can accept the responsibility of caring for their parents, other see it as a burden; and soon it’s a disadvantage and anger takes control. The elderly is living in situations that cause a major conflict between them and their care givers, putting them at risk compared to others; because of things such as living arrangements, medical costs, and mostly finances. Most of these seniors become a victim to their care givers, because the care giver soon feels it’s a burden to care for them; and expects something in return. The living conditions become too much to handle, because they feel their space is being invaded; by this new addition to their home that wasn’t predicted original in the planned settings. So, eventually they start to miss-treat them to get want they want from that individual by using authority to control their said wishes. They begin by yelling, slapping, or hitting them to gain control of their down fall; while using threats such as to kick them out, or send them away. If this doesn’t work, they threaten to take away certain privileges, like keeping them from outings with family, friends; and neighbors. Another factor that triggers abuse on the elderly, is that of alcohol; because “daily alcohol consumption is more than twice as likely among those who abuse elders as among those who do not (Reay and Browne, 2001; Bonnie and Wallace, 2003 as cited in Jones, ASID, IIDA, IDEC, and Phyllis Sloan Allen, pg. 402).
