Computer Technology and the Elderly
The computer technology of today has advanced very rapidly since the early 1980’s. Individuals have new technology that assist them in almost everything they do. Citizens use computer technology that allows them to research and explore almost anything their hearts desire. They have cell phones that are, in a sense, a handheld laptop that they use on a daily basis that is easily transportable. The computer technology of today has been used in medicine and has helped keep people alive a lot longer than in the past. Devices that have been developed such as pace makers, and diabetes trackers have helped elderly people live longer life spans. Today, elderly people are educated more with today’s technology, which is also helping them have longer life spans than before.
Technology has advanced in many ways such as making new cures for dieses and combating against common medical issues people already have, especially the elderly. The first is the age related medical changes. As people get older, their bodies start to change beyond their control. One natural change that happens is with sensory and motor skills. Vision is one sensory element that humans tend to lose as they get older: “people aged 70 years and older, 18% report blindness in 1 or both eyes or some other trouble seeing” (Crews & Campbell, 2004). Elderly people show a slower feedback when it comes to numerous parts of their vision, such as light sensitivity, color perceptions and resistance to glare.
