A stem cell is a cell that can change or develop in to different types of cells. Currently scientists are hoping that the stem cells can be used to grow tissues and organs which mean that they are still researching. Stem cells come from embryonic and adult stem cells. The embryonic stem cell comes from embryos which are 4~5 days old and the adult stem cells come from adult tissues. Also stem cells could be found in the teeth, the bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, amniotic fluids etc. Totipotent, pluripotent and multipotent are the three main types of stem cells. Totipotent stem cells are the most important stem cell types because it can be developed into any cell in the human body. Pluripotent cells which are also known as true cells are cells that have the ability to differentiate to any cells in the body. Cord blood stem cells transplant has saved thousands of lives in the world today. Cord blood stem cells have been used to treat over 75 diseases, anemias, malignancies etc. Currently cord blood stem cells can treat diseases like Acute Leukemia, Chronic Leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Lymphoproliferactive Disorders, Phagocyte Disorders, Inherited Metabolic disorders etc. Not only does stem cells help cure things but also it helps us research things. An embryonic cell is a good example of that. Some examples are to understand how diseases happen, it can help us find a new drug that will help cure people and it could advance the cell based therapies. These examples show how stem cells are used and how useful they are to our world and that gives us the reason to research and understand stem cells better so that one day it could be more useful to our lives than
