Throughout the diverse and complex history of the human culture, one thing is constant; the idea of problems. Dictionary.com defines a problem as “a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome” and humans have acquired an uncountable amount of conflicts in everyday life. No matter the problem happening in a society a person known as a hero, whether a real person or merely a story, are established to bring hope to a troubled society. A hero is a timeless character that is valiant, strong, brave, kind, and selfless; this character can aspire citizens to maintain hope for a better life through the problems they might face. The Greeks created Hermes with these abilities to make the loss of a love one easier to handle. Hermes story was written that he, bring an epic hero, was always looking to bring help to the hopeless and helpless, “In the Eleusinian myth of the abduction of Persephone, he was sent by Zeus to fetch the goddess back from Haides, and was thereafter appointed as the Guide of Dead Souls,” (Atsma). Persephone was enslaved by Hades to stay in the underworld and be his wife; Hermes in the story became the messenger by helping a defenseless woman. Hermes in this tale is demonstrates that integrity leads to great outcomes; therefor, always do good even when no one is watching. Hermes, by being the guide to the underworld, was showing a timeless example to many for an ideal hero by bring hope for the diseased. Hermes was created with talents to help deceased souls, “With the ability to move freely between worlds, he also served as the guide of the souls of the dead to the underworld and the afterlife,” (“Hermes”). Many believed souls would get lost after leaving a body and during the process of death; and Hermes would help them with this fear for he would show them the way.
