English Composition Course Analysis

In fall 2015, I took English Composition 1 course. The style, syntax and basic organizational basic of writing were focus of this class. During the semester, I learned three significantly important parts of writing skills which covered in the course. The skills are analyzing and evaluating a written expression; how to develop central idea and understanding writing process as planning process. These writing skills played a significant role in completing my assignments of thesis writing in the class and hopefully will be a stepping stone in my future task writing.

The process begins with recognizing that the heart of any thesis is a single idea or closely related set of ideas that the writer wants to defend. Stating the thesis statement concisely and early on a write-up was among the significant lessons that I learned in this course. In this lesson, emphasis was given to the use of sufficient relevant evidence and explanation in an essay or paragraph to support the thesis and/or topic sentence. In stating and enlisting of supporting statement—specifically, I learned the importance of inclusion of necessary information and explanations, consideration of opposing views and perspectives, interpretation and explanation of evidence, and connecting support directly to the main point. The overall lesson of developing a central idea refers to as how a paragraph or essay is organized, methods used to develop the idea, the process of adding informative, detail examples and taking it through an appropriate pattern of organization to support of the main idea of the paragraph or the essay. In this lesson, writing process was described as step by step act that requires planning, implementing, revising, editing and finalizing as a publication. Once ready for writing, planning stage is when the writer will attempt to find an idea and further build the idea through brain storming or free writing. Planning also includes sorting and putting together these ideas that we have gathered from our free writing and brain storm. Correcting and making adjustment on writing at this stage is unnecessary, a mistake which I always used to make. Then, the process of writing continues and writing begins. This is the stage that the writer starts to implement the plan. Correction on grammar is still not a major part of this step. Adding, removing, rearranging or replacing are all done during the next step of writing process, revision. It the step of writing that our piece may significantly change. This step of the process prepares our work for the next step of writing process editing which is a careful line by line reading and checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation and repetition of
