A1) Environmental Metrics: The main focus in this area is energy conservation, which they achieve by implementing four different procedures: reducing their need for electricity and natural gas during the peak hours, employing the new Smart Grid technology, on site power generation using solar photovoltaic panels and, an internal energy tax. The new Smart Grid technology allows New Belgium Brewery to collect notifications from the electricity provider when their electricity level usage are at their peak. In this article, there is a dispute between a conglomerate of brewing companies including New Belgium Brewery and the government of the United States. The brewing companies oppose a water treatment rule that will dramatically impact the quality of their beer. Jenn Vervier Vice President of strategy and sustainability of New Belgium Brewery, explains that the quality of their beer is attributed to the quality of their water which she claims comes from municipal sources in great locations, where the probability of water contamination is very low.
